Shakespeare’s King John

King John clings to a crown with a shaky claim while France, the papacy, and his own barons circle. The play’s conscience belongs to the Bastard, Philip Faulconbridge — one of Shakespeare’s first great ironic commentators, a man who sees exactly how the game of legitimacy works and plays it anyway.

Pick it up for the Bastard’s commodity speech, for Constance’s ferocious grief, and for a portrait of political improvisation that feels startlingly modern: nobody in this play has a plan, only reactions. It sits apart from the two great tetralogies, which makes it a fine low-stakes entry into the histories.
